Mini Unit Studies for Pre-K

It is so easy to put together your own mini unit studies for Pre-K. It does take a little prep ahead of time,  but it is so much fun in the end.
At the beginning of the school year, I wrote down a list of ideas for unit studies--bugs, farm animals. ocean animals, flowers, etc. I started looking for books and short videos on YouTube to support my plans. Pinterest is an invaluable tool for craft and lesson ideas.
At this age, the unit studies don't have to be in-depth (unless your kids are begging for more!). If you can put together a little lesson that will appeal to and touch (smell, touch, taste, hearing, sight) as many of their senses as possible, you will hit a home run.
Little people--just like big people--need something to think about. I think this is why they constantly ask so many questions. If we can start now and support their inquisitiveness and give them good, meaty things to think about, it will help develop a love of learning new things for the rest of their lives.

Here is what our bug week looked like:
We did a bug a day--bees, ladybugs, butterflies, and ants. These were all bugs I knew we could find in our backyard.
I found free coloring page or craft to go along with each bug (I use Pinterest A LOT), and found age appropriate videos on Youtube for each bug.
For Bee Day, we watched the video below, let the kiddos try some fresh local honey, did a bee craft, and looked for and observed bees in the backyard.

Another week we learned about birds. One day the focus was ducks. We read this book, Just Ducks, purchased from Amazon, then went to the local park and fed the ducks at the pond. We found out that the ducks at our park do not like healthy foods like carrots, but prefer bread and Cheetos.

It is so easy to put together mini unit studies--what are you waiting for? You and kids will have so much fun!
